Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (fondly known as NYFW) kicked off earlier in the week and besides the zillions of runway shows happening right now, there’s been some seriously noteworthy eye candy debuting outside the venues.
It seems that street stylers are gaining more recognition than the designers themselves, with stylish trendsetters (including celebrities, editors, buyers and bloggers) forming their own kind of eclectic fashion parade on the sidewalks.
Sightings of fur jackets, beanies and lots of leather and tartan have been plentiful, paying homage to a punk rock revival. There’s even been the odd turban spotting, paired with the very on-trend, 60s inspired circular round sunglasses.
Well-heeled Oliver Palermo has been happy to dress the part, and Karlie Kloss has taken short breaks from the catwalks to get snapped by the pap on the streets.
But most notable have been the beauty looks off and on the runways. They may be timeless, but this season classics like the bold berry lip, matte black nails and flawlessly porcelain skin seem radically transformed. The result? A new look of fresh modernity.
Here are some key beauty trends from the shows for Autumn/Winter 2014 and the corresponding products to help recreate the looks:
BURGUNDY LIPS: Over at Rebecca Minkoff, lips were burgundy red with a just-bitten, semi-smudged finish. Get your own version with Sisley Phyto Lip Shine Ultra Shining Lipstick in # 6 Sheer Burgundy. Slick it on your lips and then tap some pigment off for a subtly faded effect.
BOLD EYES: At Rachel Comey, smoky, lived-in eyes were all the rage with plum pigment under the lower water line. Get the look with NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Club Mix Tape. Yes, it’s generally used on the pout, but makeup artists at the Comey show drew this on underneath the eyes and paired with fresh skin and lips for an edgy, carefree look.
BRIGHT SKIN: As seen at Costello Tagliapietra, play up your natural beauty and bring out your ethereal glow with Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener mixed with a glowy foundation like Calvin Klein Runway Radiance Illuminating Cream.
FLUSHED CHEEKS: The “I just came back from ski-ing on the slopes” look is in, with freshly flushed cheeks debuting at Snow Bunny. It’s low-maintenance yet still incredibly gorgeous. Get the look by swirling a fluffy blush brush coated in lots of pigment on the apples of your cheek. Reach for T. LeClerc Powder Blush in No. 06 Orange Braisee.
BALLERINA BUNS: A tightly twisted bun will make you feel like a ballerina for a day, as spotted at Christian Dior and Peter Som. Run some Lanza Healing Volume Zero Weight Gel through your roots, slick the hair back and create a twisted bun at the nape of your neck secured with bobby pins. Try out a sleek middle part for a more daring appeal. Fierce.
FULL BROWS: Ah yes, the full brows are back and better than ever. Brush the hair upwards with a spoolie brush and seal with a slick of Billion Dollar Brows Clear Brow Gel. Pair with glossy lips, as seen at Dion Lee.
Now go forth and make these runway trends come alive!
