Skincare is far from a static, one-size-fits-all plan so it’s important to adapt your routine to your skin’s ever-changing needs as you age. The same harsh face wash and lightweight moisturiser from your high school days just isn’t going to cut it anymore.
Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s and beyond, read on to find out which products you should be reaching for each decade.
In Your 20s… Skin is at its healthiest in your 20s thanks to great collagen support. Despite this, it’s imperative you care for your skin the right way during this decade as this will determine how you look for the rest of your life. To take care of your skin, use sun block – and lots of it! Sun damage does not generally show in your 20s, but it will later on, so be sure to slather on a good SPF that gives you both UVA and UVB protection such as Mustela Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion. Apply all over your face and on your neck and chest on a daily basis. The 20s are also a time for breakouts to occur, so make a habit of washing your face before bed and after you exercise with a mild cleanser — either a gel, if your skin is oily, or a milky one, if it’s dry. Switch up your dehydrating skincare products (which can strip the skin of their natural oils and cause the oil glands to overproduce, resulting in blemishes) with a hydrating, protective moisturiser like Eve Lom Moisturiser + SPF 15 which won’t leave the skin feeling greasy. It’s all about damage prevention!
In your 30s… This is a time where you begin to see the first real signs of wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth. The gold standard for reducing fine lines, stimulating collagen and treating imperfections is with skincare products containing antioxidants and renewing ingredients like retinol and Vitamin C. Before bed, apply a pea-size amount of an anti-aging lotion such as EmerginC Triple Threat Cream (which contains mixed natural fruit acids and salicylic acid blended with magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, retinol, green tea and plant glycerin to improve tone & texture) all over your face and right up under your eyes, to combat the signs of aging. You might also notice that your skin tone becomes a bit more uneven or dull because your skin’s ability to renew damaged cells begins to decrease, so exfoliating regularly is important in this instance to help get your glow back. Try Christian Dior Instant Gentle Exfoliant which is formulated with fine beads derived from silica to encourage cellular regeneration to boost skin’s strength.
In your 40s… This is generally when age spots and wrinkles have to started to settle in as skin starts to get thinner and lose its elasticity. Decreasing estrogen levels may have also made it dry and uneven. Regenerate your skin’s texture with a misting cleanser that contains mild alpha hydroxy acids such as Cellex-C Betaplex Fresh Complexion Mist and choose a moisturiser with an SPF of at least 15 like Trilogy Daily Defence Moisturiser, which is fortified with hyaluronic acid and pure plant oils to enhance hydration in skin and even out pigmentation while prompting collagen production. Give your visage an added boost with an intensive anti-wrinkle night cream or serum with retinol which will protect your skin from damaging free radicals and leave it feeling velvety smooth and youthful. Try Skin Ceuticals Retinol 1.0 Maximum Strength Refining Night Cream. Don’t forget to wear a lifting and firming eye cream daily to increase suppleness.
In your 50s and beyond… You might be experiencing hormonal fluctuations which can cause dry skin and make your visage lose its firmness and tone, resulting in sagging skin and deep creases. In this case, it’s all about upping the moisture levels. Choose a non-soap cleanser that contains mild glycolic acid like Jan Marini Bioglycolic Face Cleanser and similarly a moisturiser with glycolic acid such as Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Night Cream, containing 8 powerful ingredients plus retinol, aloe vera, vitamins A C, E & pro vitamin B5 to boost skin cell turnover rates and increase smoothness. As with your 40s, peptides and Vitamin C derivatives are also fantastic at giving your face that youthful radiance as they help reduce brown spots and thicken the epidermis, so apply a serum containing these key ingredients when your face is still damp to help turn back the hands of time. If you’ve developed spider veins and hyperpigmentation, use Dr. Brandt Dark Spots No More Serum to spot treat these areas and for deep lip lines, enlist the help of Pevonia Botanica Youthful Lip Retinol Serum.
