Makeup Lockdown: How to apply primer

Makeup_Lockdown_2

Yes, you really do need to wear primer before makeup. Why? Not only does primer prep your skin for the perfect foundation application by filling in fine lines and smoothing out pores, but it also keeps your makeup looking fresh all day. It’s one of those beauty secrets that can make a big difference in the look and wear of your makeup and bring it to a whole new level. But how do you get the most out of you priming prod? Follow these steps…

Step One – Moisturise: Apply a light moisturiser before priming and allow it to fully absorb into your skin for a few minutes.  Heavy creams tend to make primer slide right off your skin so something like Origins Make A Difference Plus+ Rejuvenating Moisturiser should do the trick and will help make your priming application even.

Step Two – Blend: A little primer goes a long way, so apply a pea sized amount with your fingertips and starting in the centre of the face, work your way out to create a light and even coverage. You can also apply the product by dipping a damp foundation wedge sponge into the primer and dabbing it gently onto your face, beginning under your eyes and around your nose. Next, add the primer to your forehead, chin, nose, and cheeks and using the same sponge, blend the primer right into your skin. Use a little extra in places where your makeup tends to wear off quickly, such as in the T-zone or over large pores.

Step Three – Apply foundation: Once your primer is on, allow a few minutes for it to set before applying foundation.

Step Four – Finish with powder: To really lock in your makeup, apply a dusting of translucent powder over your base, specifically focusing on the T-zone area where makeup tends to slide off first due to oil excretion.

Now this woudn’t be a proper beauty lesson without listing 4 of my lust-have priming prods that also happen to be the shining stars of the base world:

Becca Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector, $51: Calling all oil-phobes, this formula is for you. This primer will make the most of your complexion’s natural beauty and add sheen without a hint of greasiness, giving an instant skin tightening and mattifying effect. It also helps to reduce pores while offering a smooth, matte surface that’s picture-perfect.

Estee Lauder Illuminating Perfecting Primer, $58: This bright young thing is effective at creating the perfect long-lasting visage while adding crazy amounts of glowiness to dull skin. Vitamin E, rice bran extract and shea butter add an extra hit of hydration, meaning skin looks dewy-fresh after each application.

Dermalogica Age Smart Skinperfect Primer SPF 30, $79: This stellar anti-aging over-achiever can do everything from evening out your skin texture and decreasing fine lines to infusing your complexion with a lit-from-within glow. It shields skin with SPF 30 and helps makeup stay put for hours on end. It’s also especially great for the current season, as it combats dark spots that may appear from sun exposure.

Giorgio Armani Fluid Master Primer, $88: The messiah of the primer world, this advanced formula does it all. It refines pores, softens fine lines, rules out imperfections and imparts a matte and translucent radiance to the skin. The silky texture glides onto the face, leaving behind a flawless canvas ready for makeup magic.
