The scent of the season is none other than Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L’Homme EDT, which tells a story of intensity, bold sensuality, and seduction that lies half-way between restraint and abandon.
Yves Saint Laurent, born in 1936, grew up in Oran, Algeria. At the age of 17, Saint Laurent headed to Paris where he showed his drawings to Michel de Brunhoff (director of Vogue) who then immediately published them. After a brief time in fashion school, buddy de Brunhoff introduced Saint Laurent to Christian Dior where he worked on developing iconic threads, shoes, jewels and fragrances until his tragic death in 1957.
The house of YSL recently launched its new masculine representation – La Nuit de l’Homme, announcing this cologne as one full of contrasts, tensions and powerful undertones and let me tell you, they weren’t kidding.
The composers behind this fragrance are Anne Flipo, Pierre Wargnye and Dominque Ropion who are the modern Beethoven’s, Bach’s and Mozart’s of the perfume world. Need I say more?
A dark veil of mystery and enigma surrounds the fragrance, as we gaze at its packaging. Housed in a shadowy, black-opaque flacon with a large YSL stamped hexagon-inspired cap, it is evident that this cologne is a bonafide masterpiece. Resist its charm and seduction, I dare you.
As we begin removing its enigmatic aura we are immediately hit with a strong, explosive burst of cardamom. We then continue our scent-rollercoaster with a surge of fresh bergamot, lavender and cedar, which binds elegance together with masculinity. To finish, the base notes of cumin and vetiver come together to deliver a sensual and lavish close.
With high longevity and moderate projection, La Nuit de l’Homme is the perfect all-round cologne that carries enough versatility to wear throughout the year. Personally, I think it’s a great night-time scent that will have compliments coming straight off the woodwork, thanks to its spicy and oriental notes which encapsulate inner youth intermingled with a sense of outer sophistication and nonchalance — a structure of contrasting forces.
